Building cable components
The type of rope assembly or tie you need depends on many factors. How to use components? Does it need to meet any specific specifications? What are the environmental conditions that may affect assembly? There are many aspects to consider when designing and selecting components correctly.
Step 1 - cable strength
First, determine the strength of the cable required, the weight of the component. Once the required weight load is determined, the required factor of safety needs to be achieved. If the load you need is 100 pounds, you will add some factors to ensure safety. In general, it's a factor of four to six. So you'll see a break point of 400 to 600 pounds, and the more critical the assembly, the higher the safety factor. The use of tethers and wire rope assemblies is diverse, so it is important to consider all possible factors, such as friction and environmental factors.
Step 2 - commercial or factory size cables
Choose between commercial or mil-dtl-83420 (military specification) cables (or simply dry and lubricated cables). Does the cable pass through pulleys, pulleys, or are there other factors that cause friction? Although the two types of cables have the same minimum breaking strength, mil-dtl-83420 is a higher quality product that generally has better performance and durability due to internal lubrication. However, you will pay an additional price for the mil-dtl-83420 cable. So if you're looking for a more linear application with few bends, then commercial grade cables should be the best.
Step 3 - stainless steel or galvanized cable
Select the type of wire rope. There are two main considerations: environment and cost. If exposure to the environment is not a factor, galvanized cables and galvanized fittings are usually your best choice (and more economical). If you are worried about corrosion, stainless steel cables and accessories are your first choice and best choice, but you will pay a higher price than galvanizing.
Step 4 - cable flexibility
How flexible does your cable need? 7x7 or 7x19 describes the type of construction of the cable or wire rope. 7x7 and 7x19 are the most commonly used cable or wire rope assemblies. The cable is made of a wire or strand wound around the core. In a 7x7 cable, there are 7 strands (6 strands wound on a core) and each wire consists of 7 separate wires (also 6 strands wound on a core). 7x19 has 7 strands, each consisting of 19 wires (one core is wrapped by 6 wires and 12 wires). Both types of cables are considered aircraft grade cables. Although both are flexible, the 7x19 is more flexible.
Step 5 - assembly length
What is the proper length for assembly? To determine the correct assembly size, first consider which assembly points are most important. Is the use of end fittings critical to connecting components in large projects? How does the size of the loop affect the final length of the component? The end use of the component will be the determinant of the appropriate length measurement. We can help you determine the best measurement standard for a wire rope assembly or tether.
Step 6 - cable coating
Whether the cable or wire rope needs to be coated with components or lanyards. The three most common coating options are: Bare (uncoated), nylon or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The question to be considered is - under what conditions will the general assembly operate? Is it necessary to reduce friction? Will the environment be a problem? Is the appearance of the cable important? If that's true, then you should choose a cable with a coating. PVC coating is preferred for general purpose. It's more flexible, so it's easier to peel off and cheaper. Nylon coating is more wear-resistant than PVC. However, it is not as flexible as PVC and more expensive than PVC. Nylon coating is more suitable for working on pulleys and pulleys.
Step 7 - end fittings
What is the best end fitting? There are many options. The most common are rings, sleeves, punched holes, with holes or forks, plain balls or ball shanks, stop sleeves, thimbles, studs, fixing lugs or winch hooks.
